 urope and reduce overall soil loss and\ndegradation. Despite its fundament
 al role in supporting ecosystem functioning and\nbiodiversity\, soil healt
 h is rarely included in monitoring of protected areas. In addition\,\nand 
 despite soils being the fundament of all terrestrial ecosystems\, soil pro
 tection\nand nature conservation continue to be addressed largely separate
 ly in policy\nstrategies. We systematically reviewed the literature to inv
 estigate how soil has been\nobserved and potentially monitored within prot
 ected areas and how useful this could\nbe to assess soil health in nature 
 conservation. Overall\, there was a lack of\nawareness for soil or soil he
 alth in conservation contexts\, and there was little\nconsensus on which i
 ndicators could be monitored and be suitable for long-term\nassessments. O
 nly few protected areas assessed soil parameters at all\, and if so\, it\n
 was often to address specific conservation challenges with indicators chos
 en to the\nlocal conditions. No indicator set was meaningful on its own fo
 r European-wide\nconservation targets\, which highlights the need for an i
 ntegrative soil health\nmonitoring method for protected areas. SHERPA was 
 designed with an open\ndecision-tree structure and would therefore already
  be applicable in most cases with\nits existing keys for forests and grass
 lands. The development of additional keys for\nwetlands and sparsely veget
 ated areas will be needed\, because these land use\ntypes are priorities f
 or conservation in Europe. Integrating soil health and soil\nmonitoring in
 to conservation contexts could not only significantly improve\nconservatio
 n effectiveness but be critical for achieving the targets of the EU\nBiodi
 versity Strategy for 2030.
