Reproducible and Reusable Remote Sensing Workflows

The field of Remote Sensing in Earth Sciences has grown rapidly in recent years, providing valuable data and insights into a wide range of environmental phenomena. This development is driven by better access to data and computational resources provided by cloud processing platforms. The upcoming Digital Twins, though conceptually simple, come at a technologically large cost.

As research results are increasingly based on big data and complex methods, the ability to reproduce and validate them has become a significant challenge. Making large datasets available along with code and text has been identified as one of the key bottlenecks. Other roadblocks for reproducibility in Remote Sensing include restrictive data licenses, heterogeneity of software and computing environments, and code literacy.

Nevertheless, reproducibility entails benefits such as advancing method development, improving the learning process, and building trust in the result through transparency. It therefore has positive impact on science itself, education, and decision-making.

This interactive workshop aims to bring together Remote Sensing experts to discuss the current status of and future strategies for reproducibility in the field. The first part provides short contributions about recent activities that facilitate reproducible Remote Sensing today. In the second part participants will try to formulate a vision or roadmap on how reproducibility should look when working towards FAIR and open data science.

During the talk, a practical live demo will be showcased, accessing public SensorThings API endpoints exposing measurements (timeseries) about air quality (from EEA), water (BRGM), bicycle counters, traffic sensors (Municipality Ferrara).
The goal is to briefly explain the logic of the OGC SensorThings API standard (data model and API) and provide a practical experience of how to integrate standard-based dynamic data in GIS and webGIS solutions.

In this session you will learn how to access a collection of images through the existing SpatioTemporal Asset Catalogs (STAC), build a custom raster data cube and publish it as Cloud Optimized GeoTIFF (COG) in your own STAC solution. You will also learn how to access it through QGIS and a customized WebGIS solution. The workflow will be implemented in Python using pystac, stackstac, eumap and leafmap.

GEO Knowledge Hub to preserve and share EO applications: Introduction and practice

**About the workshop**

The development of the GEO Knowledge Hub (GKH) is being done with the help of the GEO community, providing capabilities that enhance the share and preservation of Earth Observation (EO) applications. These features increase the impact of the developed work, its reproduction, and replication while accelerating the development of new and innovative work.

The GKH development seeks to create a usable and inclusive system for researchers and specialists with diverse backgrounds. To make this possible, we made the features of GKH accessible in different ways. At an initial level, users can use a high-level web interface. For advanced users who want to automate the interaction with the digital repository, Rest APIs and other tools are available.

This workshop will present the main concepts used in the GKH and ways to use its features (web interface and Rest APIs). To this end, we expect our workshop to be divided into two blocks of content:

**Block 1: Introduction to the GEO Knowledge Hub concepts**

In this block, we will present the main concepts required to use the GEO Knowledge Hub (e.g., Knowledge Packages, Resources, Knowledge Providers, and Metadata standards). We will also present its main features and architecture.

**Block 2: Practice sharing and preserving EO applications using the GEO Knowledge Hub**

In this block, we will do a hands-on presentation of how an EO application can be organized, shared, and preserved with the GKH.

In a complementary way, the materials used in both content blocks will be made available through interactive web documentation so that participants can follow what is being presented or even use the materials as a reference to use the GKH with their EO applications

Let's co-create the Green Deal Data Space

The European data spaces promoted by the European Commission will ensure that more data become available to use in the economy and society and with a governance frameworks in order to facilitate data pooling and sharing in a data infrastructures. In addition to data-sharing, processing tools in a federated trustworthy cloud capacities will be made available, in a way compatible with relevant EU legislation – both in domain-specific settings and across sectors.

The GDDS will prioritize spatial data with a robust and comprehensive validation framework to check their compliance, quality and interoperability. For some people, the GDDS is a continuation of the INSPIRE initiative with a wider scope, to include Earth Observation data (e.g. Copernicus), EEA, IoT/sensor data, private data with public interest as well as citizens’ data. For others, the GDDS will offer an interoperable and trusted IT environment for processing data in the cloud. This workshop will contribute to the discussion by comparing several technical integrative approaches that may be part of the blueprint and roadmap with the instructions to integrate the GDDS as well as to discuss how to incorporate the high valuable datasets and governance structures. Giving the number of heterogeneous data sources, it will require an inclusive soft architecture with a still to-be-determined minimum set of components implementing new APIs and semantic interoperability.

Presenters will demonstrate how to access the OpenLandMap STAC, how to further use and extend layers, how to prepare layers for OpenLandMap and test them locally, and then also include in the interface / web-hosting. Some code examples in R and Python will demonstrate that the data is available for distributed computing; support channels allow for open development communities with most of discussion running via https://github.com/openlandmap/spatial-layers/.

Monitoring deforestation in Amazonia: transitioning from visual interpretation to satellite time series analysis

The Brazilian National Institute for Space Research (INPE) makes yearly assessments of deforestation in the Brazilian Amazonia rain forest since 1988, INPE’s data is considered authoritative by the scientific community, national and international media, and is used as a basis for Brazil’s reporting of greenhouse gases (GHG) emissions. Due to the need for high accuracy of the result, the PRODES maps are produced by visual interpretation and have a 93% accuracy. However, doing visual interpretation of an area of 4 million km2 requires substantial human resources. For this reason, INPE is working to transition the current data production technique to a method based on big data analytics using Sentinel-2 and Sentinel-2A images.

The INPE team has developed new methods for producing deforestation and land use and land cover change maps using satellite image time series. The method requires a regular data cube of dense satellite images. Experts provide training samples that represent the possible deforestation events. These samples train machine learning and deep learning classifiers, which work on a time-first, space-later basis. First, each pixel location is associated to a time series that is classified. Then, a neighborhood-based Bayesian smoother is applied to remove outliers and produce results that approximate those of visual interpreters. The resulting maps have a 98% coincidence with those done by human experts.

The presentation will discuss the method and its implementation in an open-source software R package. The package is one of the components of the Open Earth Monitor project.

In-situ Citizen Science Data for Training and Validation of the OEMC Monitors and other EO Mapping Models

The workshop will be structured in two parts (30 min. each). The first part will be focused on describing citizen science (CS) data that will be collected by IIASA for the OEMC use cases. However, we will also discuss the usage of the CS data beyond the OEMC project. The second part of the workshop will explore together with the workshop participants on how the presented geo-wiki toolbox can be used for the OEMC monitors both in Europe and globally and how critical data gaps can potentially be closed using CS approaches. Participants will brainstorm on a potential future geo-wiki campaign and necessary design changes to serve future data needs.
