Earth observation is providing an unprecedented wealth of data on the state of ecosystems and landscapes. Yet many observations remain primarily static proxies of what ecosystems look like, rather than how they function. The next frontier is to move from observing patterns to inferring processes, interactions, and dynamics. I will discuss how data-driven and hybrid approaches can help turn Earth observations into deeper insights into ecosystem and Earth system functioning.
