Leveraging OpenEarthMonitor Cyberinfrastructure data to assess insurance vulnerability in a changing climate
Codrina Maria Ilie, Vasile Crăciunescu

Climate change and its inescapable consequences on our lives, from the water we drink and the food we eat, to the security of our homes and the supply chains for our day-to-day activities, are in the realm of certainty. What seems to still remain is the need for a complete acknowledgement that must eventually lead to maximising worldwide efforts to better understand, quantify, predict and prepare for the possible aftermath.
The Open Earth Monitor Cyberinfrastructure is an European project that has brought together an impressive number of Earth Sciences and computer scientists that imagined and calculated a significant amount of worldwide and regional geospatial data products based on satellite data, from agriculture to forestry, from air quality to flood monitoring. Within the project, a dedicated activity was to assess to which extent the OpenEarthMonitor results can assist in providing a clearer image of the risks to which the private European sector is exposed due to climate change. A special attention was given to the financial sector with an emphasis on the insurance branch, given its significant role in the stability of the economy, through its intermediary services to transfer and allocate financial capital.
The team has extensively tested and shaped the open source tool Climada (https://climada.ethz.ch/) to evaluate the potential of OEMC generated products in the analysis of risk assessment of the European private sector.
This talk will present the results obtained.
